What is Voter ID Card?
The Voter Identity Card (also known as EPIC – Elector Photo Identity Card) is a photo identity card issued by the Election Commission of India under the Government of India. Its primary purpose is to serve as proof of a citizen's right to vote in elections and to establish their identity as an Indian citizen.
It is issued to all Indian citizens who have completed 18 years of age and are registered as voters. Apart from voting, it is widely used as a general identity, address, and age proof for various purposes such as buying a SIM card, applying for a passport, opening a bank account, and more. It also serves as a travel document for travel to Nepal and Bhutan by land or air.

How To Download Voter ID Card Online (e-EPIC) 2026
- Step 1 - Visit the official Voter Service Portal https://voters.eci.gov.in
- Step 2 - Click on the "Login" button on the top right side of the Home Page.
- Step 3 - Enter your Mobile Number, Password and Captcha Code, then click "Request OTP".
- Step 4 - Enter the OTP received on your mobile number and click "Verify & Login".
- Step 5 - After login, click on the "e-EPIC Download" button.
- Step 6 - Enter your EPIC Number (Voter ID Number), select your State and click "Search".
- Step 7 - Your Voter ID Card details will be displayed on the screen. Click "Send OTP" button.
- Step 8 - Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number and click "Verify".
- Step 9 - Click on "Download e-EPIC" button to download your Voter ID Card in PDF format.
How To Update Mobile Number in Voter Portal
- Step 1 - Login to voters.eci.gov.in using your Mobile Number and Password.
- Step 2 - Under the tab "Fill Form 8" click the button (for correction of entries in electoral roll / EPIC replacement).
- Step 3 - Select "Self" option and click "Submit".
- Step 4 - Select the option "Correction of entries in existing electoral roll" and click "Ok".
- Step 5 - Your details (State, District, Assembly Constituency) will be auto-updated. Click "Next".
- Step 6 - Under the Details section, select "Self" under Mobile Number option, enter your mobile number and click "Next".
- Step 7 - Select "Mobile Number" under the correction section, enter Mobile Number, OTP and click "Next".
- Step 8 - Enter the Declaration and Captcha Code, click "Preview and Submit" and then "Submit". Your mobile number will be updated immediately.
How To Apply For New Voter ID Card
- Step 1 - Visit voters.eci.gov.in or the Chief Electoral Officer website of your state.
- Step 2 - Register yourself as a New User with your Mobile Number and Email ID.
- Step 3 - Fill Form 6 (New Voter Registration Form) with your personal details.
- Step 4 - Upload required documents — ID proof, Age proof, Address proof and Photograph.
- Step 5 - Submit the form online or submit the paper Form 6 to your area's Booth Level Officer (BLO).
- Step 6 - After verification, your name will be added to the Electoral Roll and your Voter ID Card will be issued.
